When schools are recruiting for SEN and support roles, experience is often the first thing discussed. Years in education, previous SEN settings, and specific qualifications all carry weight. However, across many schools in Lincolnshire and Derbyshire, attitude is often the deciding factor in whether a placement succeeds long term.

SEN environments are unpredictable by nature. Pupils may present with emotional, behavioural, or communication challenges that change daily. In these settings, rigid approaches rarely work. What schools need are adults who can adapt, reflect, and remain calm when situations escalate.

A candidate with the right attitude approaches challenges with curiosity rather than frustration. They are willing to learn, ask questions, and accept feedback. This openness allows them to grow into the role rather than become defensive or overwhelmed.

Experience without the right mindset can be limiting. We regularly see candidates with strong CVs struggle because they expect SEN roles to mirror previous classroom experience. When reality differs, frustration builds quickly. In contrast, candidates with less direct experience but strong interpersonal skills often thrive because they remain flexible and patient.

Reliability is another aspect of attitude that schools value highly. Turning up consistently, communicating clearly, and following procedures builds trust. Schools notice this quickly. Pupils respond positively to adults who are predictable and emotionally available.

Training plays a crucial role in supporting attitude. When candidates feel prepared, confidence grows. Safeguarding knowledge, behaviour awareness, and clarity around professional boundaries allow staff to focus on relationships rather than uncertainty.

Schools benefit when recruitment decisions balance experience with mindset. Attitude influences how staff respond under pressure, engage with pupils, and integrate into school teams.

In SEN support, the right attitude creates resilience. Combined with training and guidance, it becomes one of the strongest predictors of long-term success.
